What A Spoonful of Sugar Really Does...

You are embarking on a new journey. A new you. A healthier you. Optimal nutrition is crucial for everyone, especially for those whose bodies are under stress, in the healing process, or are coping with disease. There are several benefits of proper nutrition when you are in the healing / treatment process. Healthy eating:

1. Reduces inflammation

2. Supports the immune system

3. Prevents candida & supports healthy digestive function

4. Supports hormone systems

5. Supports detoxification

When the body is in an unhealthy state, its defenses drop. The immune system suffers. Auto-immune disorders can develop and harmful microorganisms have the opportunity to invade. If you are already suffering from auto-immune diseases, bacterial/viral/fungal infections, or any other disease or condition that inhibits your immune system, it is imperative that you make a diet/lifestyle change to help support your immune system, not hinder it.

Research has shown that most, if not all, chronic disease is directly caused from inflammation in the body. Inflammation has been directly connected to sugar. Logic tells us that if inflammation is the cause of chronic disease, and if we eliminate sugar from our diets, then we have a very good chance of eliminating chronic disease. However, this is tougher than we think. We, as a society, are addicted to sugar. On average, we consume about 22.2 teaspoons (roughly a half a cup) of sugar every day – 182.5 cups every year!

There are many ways that sugar affects our bodies:

1. Sugar causes disturbances in the metabolizing of vitamins and minerals. These disturbances lead to cell dysfunction. For example, consuming a lot of sugar may increases the rate that calcium is excreted from the kidneys – interfering with the calcium/phospYou are embarking on a new journey. A new you. There are many ways that sugar affects our bodies:

1. Sugar causes disturbances in the synthesis of vitamins and minerals. These disturbances lead to cell dysfunction. For example, sugar increases the rate that calcium is excreted and causes imbalances in our mineral balances. This can disrupt the bone matrix and strength of bones.

2. Sugar in its natural state is surrounded with an abundance of fiber and vitamins – which properly utilize and break down the sugar. However, because of the process it goes through, refined sugar does not have these fibers and vitamins, so it can’t.

3. Sugar affects the immune system. Phagocytosis is the process that scavenger cells in the body use to kill viruses, bacteria, fungi, and clean up their wastes and debris. Your body has a natural, complex, and very powerful security system. Sugar interferes with this system, making it harder for your body to fight these unwanted nuisances.

4. Minerals in your body are catalysts for nearly all enzyme reactions. Certain minerals are depleted when sugar is metabolized, which can lead to insulin resistance and diabetes.

5. Sugar causes major inflammation on the walls of your body’s blood vessels. Vascular disease effects so many in this day and age. When the blood vessels of the heart become inflamed it’s called cardiovascular disease.

6. When the body is deficient of its vitamins and minerals, which we see sugar playing a major role in depleting, the cells do not function as they should. This breaks down the immune system, causing infection to invade, which manifests in allergies and putting unnecessary stress on the body.

It’s important to understand the harmful effects of sugar on your body. The more you know, the better decisions you can make. Now, after looking at all the negative reactions that sugar brings on, you can see why avoiding sugar is so crucial, especially when you are on your road back to health and healing!
